No. 26: Something about Us

December 30th 2008 22:39

Put on a good cd, or a favorite downloaded song, and let us take an easy ride through the mind and how nature works with it forcing it to create --

Picture yourself inside a vertical cylinder (you insert the height) with a radius somewhere between 10-20 inches. As you twist, turn and move within this imaginary shell you are moving through time and space. The ethereal walls are porous enough to allow numerous forms of stimuli to penetrate its wall. Light, sound, radio waves, cosmic rays, sound, and skin contact are just some of the identifiable incoming stimuli. Our many sensory receptors pick up these stimuli and transmit them to our brains. How we live is based on our interpretations of these incoming stimuli and what we do with them.

The funny thing about statements like those above is that when we read or hear them, they make so much sense that it is as though we have been thinking of them all along. (Responses like these happen frequently and are elicited from all such sensible proclamations.) The reality is that most people seem to just stop right here, saying to themselves that they "already knew this," and go no further. They often do not allow themselves to think deeply enough to ponder their full meaning.

Far too many people are just existing like the proverbial ships on the water, jostling with the waves up and down, in and out of situational harbors, rivers and swamps. They let life just push them along, instead of taking the helm and guiding themselves to more control of where they are going and how they plan to get there. You can bet there are countless people in some sort of power or another over us, who know this and exploit the concept to their advantage, by manipulating as much of our incoming stimuli as possible, and influencing our interpretations and reactions to them. (Our previous posts have pointed this out when discussing the biased media.)

Let's not waste our time discussing how marvelous the brain is. We all know this and can discuss the topic later. Instead, let us consider the interpretations we make with it.
Outside any super conditions beyond our control, such as natural and economic disasters, totalitarian dictatorships, imprisonment, or enslavement, etc., we have choices. The choices we make are just simple ways of defining how we interpret and react.

We can choose to interpret neutrally, positively, or negatively. If we go through life trying to keep away pain and sorrow by taking a neutral stance most of the time, the forces outside of us will crush us! Nature does not like the vacuum created by these interpretations and will rush in to fill them with one of the other two possibilities. Taking the "Pollyanna" approach too often by being overly positive and not recognizing the downsides to what is happening can leave us unbalanced too. Natural forces will once again pour in-- filling the need for balance. Being the ever pessimistic person will also create a need for balance. There has to be moderation or chaos in everything for nature to be happy in its natural state.

But, the cosmos exists with either balance and stasis, or chaos. There is movement between the two constantly. Balance taken to its ultimate end would be nothing. No energy--no heat, no light--no force. On the other hand, chaos taken to the opposite end removes all balance, wasting energy infinitely. Force must be applied to keep nature moving in an efficient manner. It is only the creative process that takes hold of the energies and molds them for purpose and efficient use of energy. For humans, it is the creative process that commands the force needed. For those not aware of it, mental thoughts ARE a form of creativity just as much as the physical actions taking place in the universe.

In many cases, the energy is only potential when kept within the mind in the forms of dreams and imaginations, but when it is released it transforms to physical energy. This is the outward expression of our reactions to any particular stimuli contacting us. Please think about it a while and picture what thoughts you may have that are negative like hate and envy, or what positive thoughts like love and appreciation come along and how you react to them.

The revelation will come that we are sensory receptors. The beauty of it all is that when we interpret the sensory input, and act in ways that assist nature, much is accomplished toward efficient use of the energies available. When we choose to interpret and act in ways that do not aid nature too often, we only waste energy and lead toward more chaos. For the former we are rewarded and for the later we are punished by both nature and humanity. Nature commands us to recognize these things and take personal control.

So what am I saying? Well, we would all be better off listening to the ancients who admonished us to seek "moderation in all things." (I would add that it takes our interpretations to determine what is "moderate.") Is it not strange that people figured this out long ago, and we still need to continue reminding ourselves?

Please keep it between the lines -- too far to the right will hurt, just as too far to the left will likewise.
