No. 35: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

February 14th 2009 19:25
Cruisin' with the Sweetie

Today IS special! The merchants are excited, after all, they have been selling more flowers, chocolate confections, stuffed animals and cards for today. But this day is so much more...

LOVE -- Oh, the wonder of it all. We are flush with passion and excitement! Our hearts beat faster in the presence of our loved one and even at the thought of him or her. It is so thrilling that even detecting a special scent, or hearing a connected song makes us happier! By seeing images of this person, being in the same vicinity, or even traveling to the same city, can trigger the most unusual, but pleasant, emotions. This is true for the first love and remains valid for loves that have lasted decades.

We want to do something special to add expressions of our commitment and connection to our special person. What can be better in life? True love is such a gift to us that we want to share it with that special someone.

Please allow me to share with you a more passionate, and personal, expression of love -- Like most everyone, I first felt the attraction very early, in first grade of all places. Later, I had such a crush on my 3rd grade sweetheart that I vowed I would marry her someday and even traveled over five hundred miles once just to see her again. Upon arriving in her little Tennessee town, distant family told me she was away in college. I lost my nerve and did not even talk to her parents.

Infatuation would over-power me several times throughout my school years. Some feelings were so strong that today, in spite of my overwhelming devotion to my wife, (whom I adore with all my heart), special feelings of emotion for those earlier ones are still present. I suppose this is natural, but, I vow they will never be developed.

But love is, above all, more than just sensing pheremones and reacting to them. It is more than possessing chemically-generated, and memory-enhanced emotions. It is RESPECT for your loved one at the highest level. I found this out at age 20 when I met her. It may may have been, or will be, at a younger age for you.

Seeing that smile across a parking lot, sitting down at a picnic table or for dinner, or especially when she is directly in front of me triggers all the same pleasant responses they did over 40 years ago. Taking a moment to stop, look into her eyes and gently stroke her face or hair elevates my senses, and energizes me. Just touching or holding hands can do the same thing under different conditions. Soon my thoughts travel to memories and gratitude for such a blessing.

The bedroom has its place, and I will not sell it short, but it is not the only place to feel these strong emotions.

Many today are not able to be with one another for one reason or the other. If this is the case, take the time to phone, write a letter, email or text your loved one. You will be energized and happy you did.

Culturally, many of us picture the man taking flowers or candy to his special someone. But, my friends, women should feel free expressing themselves too. That nice card can mean more than you can imagine to the other too.

St. Valentine's Day is a time for passion, reflection and gratitude. We do ourselves and others so much good by taking the time to show our love.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Please keep it between the lines.

That's lovely, Edward Allen! My husband and I got married after knowing each other 3 days. 25 years ago! He's gone all but three days a month and we're still madly in love. I get a kick out of just seeing him sitting in his favorite chair when he's home! He'll be here tomorrow and the honeymoon continues! Happy Valentine's Day!

What a lovely tribute to marriage. I am very proud of both of you, especially keeping the love fires burning under those conditions and for such a duration.

I just wish we could help so many of the young people realize it. It seems far too many are concentration on the physical sex acts itself instead of developing true commitments.

Oops! I should proofread better. I meant to say:
"concentrating."

On her next anniversary, my daughter will have been married to the same man for half of her life, Edward Allen! She had just turned 16 when they wed. I told them "we don't play house in this family" and they took me seriously. She raised her step daughter (now a US Marine) and had their son 4 years after the wedding. Guess commitments run in the family. LOL
