No. 43: Media Flashing
August 5th 2009 19:11
Have you ever been on the road for several hours, going into the night, when your eyes began to itch, ache or start an overall rebellion? They are tired--tired from the bright sunlight flashing through the roadside trees and buildings, tired from facing west with the visor pulled down for protection, and tired from the oncoming headlights--especially the ones from the self-centered who refuse to dim them upon approach.
Our wonderful eyes are built to take a beating and keep on sending, but does all this extra flashing affect our brains? I have wondered this for some time ever since my sister, who takes medications for seizures, explained that she cannot watch certain movies and commercials because the flashing and strobing create a profusion of seizures that can incapacitate her for days. Her physicians have confirmed this problem.
When we watched our old giant nonHD television, no one seemed to mind. Now, that we watch an LCD HD, I began to understand. Sometimes, all in the room, just have to close their eyes briefly during automobile commercials, trailers for upcoming action flicks, and some scenes in television shows themselves.
I have some more questions:
1) While covering emergencies, why do all television outlets and networks seem to focus on the strobing police and fire engine colored lights? People, if you have not noticed already, this can hurt!
2) Why do some celebrity tell-all shows feel they have to strobe between every scene?
3) Why do auto commercials strobe our eyes between frame changes?
Yes, we all recognize that they are seeking to create more excitement for their shows, products or events, but who knows the true consequences?
I would suggest that if you are a doctoral candidate and need a subject for study, why not look into the effects of strobing upon our eyes, and the connections to psychological and physical damage possibilities. We need to know.
Please keep it between the lines.

The Political Brief
I'm sorry about your sister! TV can be annoying at best. Can she wear shades or something to shield her eyes?
I don't write for Orble anymore. I only stop by to check on and comment for my friends. Just started a new blog today. Check it out if you get the chance.
