Part Three: Media Control
July 21st 2008 16:08
In Part Two, we took a brief look at the tumbling financial condition of many newspapers. I suggested that their current economic straights were due not just to the world's slumping conditions, but could be attributed, in whole or in part, to a wiser readership. No longer are most people willing to take what is presented at face value.
Here a humorous, often circulated Internet example. Take a look:
A biker was riding by the zoo, when he saw a little girl leaning into
the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabbed her by the cuff of her
jacket and tried to pull her inside to rip her apart under the eyes
of her screaming parents. The biker jumped off his bike, ran to
the cage and hit the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain, the lion jumped back, letting go of the
girl, and the biker brought her to her terrified parents, who thanked
him endlessly.
A New York (Blank) reporter, who had watched the whole
a man do in my whole life."
The biker replied, "Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind
bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right."
The reporter said, "Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed.
I am a journalist from the New York (Blank) you, know and
tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page. So, what do
you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?"
The biker replied, " I am a U.S. Marine and a Republican."
The following morning, the biker picked up a copy of this newspaper
to see what account was there, and read on the front page:
US MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS
HIS LUNCH.
The point is that all of us must stay alert and vigilant. All the media are out to control our minds and influence our actions. By keeping us titilated or fearful, they reinforce our need to see their articles again -- thus selling more advertising via more readership. I think the sociologists took control of the many journalists' minds long ago.
When I sign off with the words "Keep between the lines," you have by now recognized the obvious double intender. Not only should we play it safe in our respective lives, but we should be reading between the lines to dross off the nonsense and let the real metal reveal itself.
In Part Two, I promised to look at the television media and provide examples of their biases. That will have to wait until Part 4. Personally, I am chomping at the bit, so to say. I am eager to get started. I hope you are also.
Keep it between the lines.
